An hour passed and we’d neither seen nor heard from Ronnie.

“We should fix something for Ida to eat. I think we might have some of her chicken soup in the freezer.”

Dad opened the door and stared at the stacked plastic containers. He sighed. “Which one?”

“I used red covers for beef, orange for poultry, yellow for seafood, and white for vegetarian.”

“Good to know you haven’t changed.”

My face heated. My shoulders sagged. He knew me well. I liked the order. Then he chuckled. I shook my head and removed an orange container from the freezer. While it warmed on the stove, I reorganized the remaining foodstuffs.

I chopped a carrot, celery stalk, and onion to add and freshen the stew, a trick I learned from Ida.

The doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it, Dad.”

I expected Ronnie. I got a surprise.
